Toughened Glass

Toughened Safety Glass – Strengthened ,

🔍 What is Toughened Safety Glass?

Toughened safety glass, also known as tempered glass, is a type of glass that has been processed to increase its strength compared to normal glass. Through controlled thermal treatments, the glass is heated to approximately 620°C and then rapidly cooled. This process puts the outer surfaces into compression and the interior into tension, making it up to five times stronger than standard glass .

In the rare event of breakage, toughened glass shatters into small, blunt pieces rather than sharp shards, significantly reducing the risk of injury.

🔍 Understanding Critical Glazing Areas

According to Approved Document K of the UK Building Regulations, critical locations requiring safety glazing are

  • Doors: Any glazing wholly or partially within 1500mm from floor level.

  • Adjacent to Doors: Glazing within 300mm of a door's edge and also within 1500mm from floor level.

  • Low-Level Glazing: Any glazing within 800mm from floor level, not covered by the above categories.

In these areas, safety glass such as toughened or laminated glass is required to minimize injury risks upon impact.

🛠️ Our Toughening Process

At Hamilton Glass, we follow a meticulous process to ensure the highest quality toughened glass:

  1. Cutting: Glass is cut to the desired size and shape before tempering.

  2. Heating: The glass is heated uniformly to approximately 620°C

  3. Quenching: Rapid cooling with high-pressure air jets induces compressive stresses on the surface.

  4. Inspection: Each piece undergoes rigorous quality checks to meet safety standards.
