Toughened Laminated Glass Installation to Penguin Enclosure Using Winlet Glazing Robot

What was the purpose of this glazing project?

This project involved upgrading the glazing to a penguin enclosure to improve safety, security, and durability for both visitors and the animals. The works were carried out as part of ongoing improvements to ensure the enclosure met public-facing safety standards while maintaining clear visibility.

What type of glass was installed?

Toughened laminated glass with a PVB interlayer was specified for this installation. This type of glass provides high impact resistance while ensuring that, in the unlikely event of breakage, the glass remains bonded together rather than fragmenting.

Why is laminated glass important in public and animal environments?

Laminated glass is essential in public and animal welfare settings because it significantly reduces risk. The PVB interlayer holds the glass together if damaged, protecting visitors from falling glass and ensuring animals remain safely contained within the enclosure.

How was the glass delivered to site?

The glass panels were delivered on a stillage, allowing them to be transported safely and efficiently. This method ensures large-format glass remains protected prior to installation and can be handled in a controlled manner on site.

How was the glass installed?

Due to the size and weight of the panels, installation was carried out using a Winlet glazing robot. Mechanical handling was essential to allow precise positioning of the glass while significantly reducing manual handling risks for installers.

Why use a Winlet glazing robot for this type of work?

A Winlet glazing robot allows large and heavy glass panels to be lifted, manoeuvred, and installed with accuracy and control. It improves on-site safety, reduces installation time, and is particularly well suited to public-facing environments where precision and risk management are critical.

Where did this installation take place?

The works were carried out at the penguin enclosure at Chessington World of Adventures, prior to the main glazing installation works commencing.

How does this installation improve visitor safety?

The toughened laminated glass creates a strong, secure barrier while maintaining clear sightlines. Visitors can safely view the enclosure without risk of impact damage or glass failure in a high-traffic area.

How does the glazing benefit animal welfare?

The upgraded glazing provides a stable, secure enclosure that reduces external disturbance and risk. This helps create a calmer, safer environment for the penguins while maintaining visibility and interaction for guests.

Can this type of glazing be used elsewhere?

Yes. This type of toughened laminated glass installation is suitable for a wide range of applications including zoos, theme parks, schools, leisure facilities, and other public or animal welfare environments where safety and durability are paramount.

This project demonstrates our experience in delivering complex, large-scale glazing installations using specialist equipment and safety-led glass specifications.
